Magic Twig Weekend & Shadowbox Prom!!!

This weekend looks to be a great one with some heavy hitting events happening around town! Let’s have a look at what’s going on…

This Thursday (3/24) Kirk Avenue Music Hall presents the Foghorn String Band. Hailing from Portland, Oregon this old time string band plays their own blend of pre-bluegrass styled country music that will keep your feet tapping. Their fiddler is worth experiencing alone! Opening the evening will be Roanoke’s own Rootstone Jug Band featuring former members of the New Roanoke Jug Band as well as members of the Young Sinclairs. This show is set to start at 8pm and will cost you $12 at the door, $6 for students.

On Friday (3/25) the Bazaar presents a Magic Twig Community showcase at Kirk Avenue Music Hall. The first in a series of monthly shows at Kirk put on by the Bazaar. This show will feature Magic Twig acts the Young Sinclairs, the Sad Cobras and Eternal Summers. Costing only $5, all ages and starting at 8pm. Above is a music video for the Young Sinclairs’ song “Left & Right”. Watch the video for Eternal Summers “Safe at Home” right HERE! Also check out a video for the Sad Cobras “Bogged Down” HERE!

On Saturday (3/26) the Shadowbox celebrates its 1 year anniversary!!! The Shadowbox gang will be throwing a prom to beat any prom you ever attended in high school with a full bar! So think John Hughes and wear your best or worst prom attire. Stevie D of the Illbotz will be there providing the music for the evening so you know there will be plenty of great tunes to get you through the evening! Come out and celebrate with the Shadowbox at 8pm!

Also on Saturday in Blacksburg local hookah joint She-Sha is throwing a show not to be missed! Roanoke’s the Bastards of Fate headline a show featuring Blacksburg favorites the Blind Photographers, CBZL (pictured above) and Fire Foundation.  This show is free for all so make it a point to come out and have some fun! This show starts at 8:30pm.

Welcome to February!

Hello everyone! There are quite a few events happening this week around town and the surrounding area. Before we get to these events we would like to make a special announcement. Scenic Recovery will be joining forces with roanoke revolution to bring you the best coverage of what’s going on around our valley. This will not mean that Scenic Recovery is going away, we will continue to function as normal. What it does mean is that we will have help, a team of people dedicated to the underground here in Roanoke and a better opportunity to expand and really cover the people/places/music/art/film that make our community what it is. We look forward to this partnership and hope that you’ll stick with us and see this thing grow!

Now on to what’s happening this week!

Thursday (February 3rd) Roanoke artist Jane Vance will open the doors to her new gallery. Vance is best known for the above painting “Amchi” which was featured in the 2010 documentary A Gift For the Village. Join the artist as she plays host while guests filter in and out viewing her nearly 100 pieces of Tibetan themed art. Starting at 5pm and running until 9pm the Jane Lillian Vance Gallery is located at 309 1st St in downtown Roanoke.

On Thursday evening Charlottesville-based americana group the Hackensaw Boys will be headlining Awful Arthur’s Towers location. The Hackensaw Boys have become quite the popular outfit around Virginia having shared the stage with the Flaming Lips, De Le Soul and Modest Mouse. Also on the bill for the evening is Roanoke americana outfit the Watershed Conspiracy. This show starts at 9pm, tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door.

On Friday (February 4th) the Shadowbox located on Kirk Avenue will show After Last Season. The Shadowbox claims this is one of the strangest films they’ve brought to us thus far. Judging by the trailer I’d say they could be right! What looks to be a thriller done in the laughable yet cultish style of the Room I’d say its worth going for how “bad” or “good” it could be. Head out to the Shadowbox this Friday at 8pm to find out for yourself.

Also that Friday night in Blacksburg is a house show featuring Roanoke’s own Nancy & 2 Meteors. Also playing the show are Blackburg one person party groups the Blind Photographers and CBZL. This show is set to start at 9pm on McDonald Street. Donations to the bands are appreciated!

Three shows in Blacksburg on the same Friday night you ask? Why yes there are… but of  very different calibers. Whether or not you’re attending the house show or Gillie’s you should make it a point to check out what’s going on at Lucie Monroe’s Coffeehouse. Starting at 7pm sharp you will be entertained by a large line up of folk singers and songwriters. Featuring the talents of Without A Fight, Ike As In Dwight’s Maya Renfro, Dragon Worrier, Paul Riffe, Woofdog, and Kenny Spade & Neal Buck. If you decide to go to this show it will end by 10pm while the house show and Gillie’s show both start at 9pm. Not too much overlapping there! Cost at the coffee shop show is only $3!

Starting on Friday and ending in the afternoon on Saturday the Grandin Village invites you to take part in Winterfest! Valley Bank is celebrating its move and opening by throwing a contest. The rules are as follows; pick up your “passport” from Valley Bank on Friday, visit twelve out of the twenty-four Grandin Village businesses listed on the form, return the passport to Valley Bank by 2pm on Saturday the 5th. The prize? A New York City get-a-way for two! All this for supporting local business! So go support your local businesses and enter to win!

To round up the massive explosion of shows going on Friday in Blacksburg we give you Hoop Dreams with DJ Manta Ray at Gillies. Hoop Dreams is a mellow indie pop band from Blacksburg featuring former Wild Nothing members, Jeff Haley & Max Brooks. Gillies is one of my personal favorite venues in Blacksburg with a great selection of food and awesome micro brews. Starting at 9pm this show is 18 & up and FREE!

On Saturday (February 5th) Richmond-based metal band Inter Arma will be playing Magic Twig Community studio the Mystic Fortress. The band features former False Hope vocalist Mike Paparo and sitting in with them on drums will be Young Sinclairs member Samuel Lunsford, aka Joneski. This show starts at 9pm on Cleveland Avenue and is donation based.

Back in Roanoke on Saturday the Blues BBQ & Co. present a night with the Browning Brothers. Ryan & Matt Browning bring their blend of roots and rock starting at 10pm and running late. Admission is free, 21 & up. Come on down to see some excellent music, eat some awesome food and try any of Blues’ taps.

Magic Twig Community group the Young Sinclairs received placement for two end of the year music lists. The band was featured in a U.K. 2010 top 100 song list for their song “Memory System” off of the digital release of the “We Spoke Our Minds E.P.”. The group was also featured along with Eternal Summers in a Seattle, WA based blog for the top albums of 2010. The Young Sinclairs placed with their release of “Chimeys” and Eternal Summers placed with “Silver”. Below are the links to these sites.

Lastly, the Unicorn Stables Project: Studios & Gallery are now taking submissions for their newest exhibit. Secret Histories of a Space Age continues the Unicorn Stables’ reputation for delivering to us some great Roanoke and surrounding area art. Here is the submission guidelines from Unicorn Stables…

“Secret Histories of a Space Age is an interactive performance and visual arts event documenting mankind’s illustrious past of space exploration. Secret Histories of a Space Age delves into all our final frontiers. It shows us where we have boldly gone, and where we hope to go.

email .jpg image submissions to unicornstablesproject@gmail.com

We are looking for futuristic, dystopian, sci-fi and fantasy art in any media (including performance, sculpture, and video work).
Work must be ready to hang.

Show opens March 3rd, and is included in the Roanoke Marginal Arts Festival. Show will run till March 12th.”

On Thursday (1/27) the Blue Nile in Harrisonburg will play host to what looks to be a very exciting show. Harrisonburg/Norfolk-based Super Vacations will headline the show while Roanoke’s own Eternal Summers and Charlottesville’s Order. If you are in the area and can make it out I high suggest going. Order has been around for quite a while (2001 or so) and is amazing to see live. This show starts at 9pm.

Flannel Gurl Records will be having its last Flannel Friday show this Friday (1/28) at the unusual starting time of 5:15pm. The reason for the start time being so early is there are a lot of bands playing together on one bill. Eight bands on one bill to be exact. A couple of notables playing are Georgia’s the Emotron, Florida’s imadethismistake and Harrisonburg’s Buck Gooter. Why is this the final Flannel Friday? Rumor has it that Flannel Gurl Records is going to focus towards more label related functions. Come out to a last hurrah of sorts this Friday in Blacksburg at Jax on 130 Jackson St., $6.

On Saturday (1/29) the Bazaar on Brandon Rd. will host Roanoke’s Amanda Bocchi & the Body Parts. Also playing will be Blacksburg-based Nash Smith & the Ganges who will be opening the show. Personally, I am very excited to check out this new group from Blacksburg. I listened to their recordings a really dug it. A good mix of Portishead and Beach House. This show will start at 9pm, $5. Get there on time!!!

Running from now until February 27th at the Roanoke Natural Foods Co-Op is Stephen Cort Smith’s “the Dream Comparison”. This is a display of selected works created in MS Paint, the unusual medium Smith has become known for. All prints are for sale ranging from $10-$15. Above is Smith standing next to his piece entitled “Let’s Cuddle”.

On Monday (1/31) the Shadowbox on Kirk Ave. is showing 80’s cult classic comedy, the Heathers! Come watch Winona & Christian kill for revenge and romance. Witness the famous dead gay son scene. Experience the trauma a high school goes through when struck by a mass “suicide”. This film starts at 8pm.

I’d like to end this post with two really awesome articles on one of the best venues in Roanoke, Bazaar Consignments. Jamie Booker’s consignment shop has come a long way in its year and a half of operation. Its hosted a slew of shows proving you can have great bands play, people turn out and not charge an arm and a leg at the door. Other music oriented venues have taken notice of the success of this basement consignment shop with Kirk Avenue Music Hall being one of these. In fact, Kirk Avenue has teamed up with the Bazaar to bring a monthly showcase to Kirk’s doors called “The Bazaar Presents…”. This showcase will follow the Bazaar’s tradition of only cost $5 as opposed to Kirk’s more pricier admission fees. On March 25th the first show of this series will take place featuring Magic Twig Community bands the Young Sinclairs & the Sad Cobras. Jamie has had two articles on her shop come out this week. Read the article in the Roanoke Times’ Sunday extra section HERE! Also check out this article on the Bazaar by Blue Ridge Traditions HERE! Congrats to the Bazaar!

Everyone is curious about this film so fill that curiosity and go see it on Monday the 13th at 7pm.

Mid October Events…

This month has been an awesome month for the horror/ thriller fan in Roanoke! The Shadowbox keeps proving its love for Halloween and the genre inspired by the gruesome by showing Quentin Tarantino’s “Death Proof”. An homage to charged up car movies and 70’s shock this film stars action great Kurt Russell as an ex stunt driver bent on proving to his victims just how death proof his car is… at least in the driver’s seat. Also starring Rosario Dawson and a slew of other kick-ass stunt girls and beauties this film is not to be missed! Making a special appearance that night at the Shadowbox will be the ACTUAL Death Proof car!!! Sponsored by Ride Solutions & King Screen this film will show on Monday, October 11th at 8pm.

Showing on Wednesday, October 13th at the Shadowbox is one of the craziest Japanese horror/ fantasy films ever created.  Nobuhiko Obayashi’s 1977 film “House” (Hausu) tells the story of a young girl with her head in the clouds named Oshare who takes her friends to visit her dying aunt and stumbles upon shocking horrors within the aunt’s secluded home. Featuring an elderly demon aunt and a ferocious white fluffy cat from hell this film will be showing at 8pm on Wednesday. If you dig “House” at the Shadowbox on the 13th then pick up its Criterion release later in the month on the 26th.

On Sunday October 17th the Shadowbox will show 1967 horror/comedy/stop-motion/ cult classic “Mad Monster Party”. Starring the voices of horror legend Boris Karloff and comedy icon Phyllis Diller this is a film for the whole family! When Dr. Frankenstein (Karloff) retires from the monster making business he decides to throw a party to name a successor. Everyone is there including Dracula, the Werewolf, Frankenstein’s Monster, the Mummy, Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde and many more! Come dance to a skeleton garage rock band playing the film’s original song “Do the Mummy” and laugh at this Halloween inspired, family friendly, animated classic! This showing starts at 2pm, bring the kids!

On that same Sunday (October 17th) one of Harrisonburg’s favorite venues, Clementine’s will be hosting an indie favorite alongside a certain rising Roanoke duo. Xiu Xiu will be headlining the show in support of their new album entitled Dear God, I Hate Myself released by prolific indie label, Kill Rock Stars. Opening the show and fresh off their tour with Jenny & Johnny will be Roanoke Magic Twig duo, Eternal Summers. The Summers will be playing in support of their newest release on Kanine Records entitled Silver. This is a very awesome show that is well worth the trip to Harrisonburg. Eternal Summers review on Cokemachineglow

Hello, readers.
Since last week was pretty slow, we decided not to post anything. This week, we’re going to make up for that absence…hope you didn’t miss us too much!

Indie webzine Cokemachineglow posted a pretty good review of the Eternal Summers EP, and we thought we’d share it with you.

“Hailing from Roanoke, Virginia, the band achieves the rare feat of making simple music that doesn’t make a spectacle of its own simplicity. For example, behold “Fall Straight Back,” a truly wonderful pop song made from the humblest materials, a macaroni necklace that glistens like a strand of diamonds. Backed by a couple of dutifully strummed power chords and a simple, steady beat, Nicole Yun leads the way to a chorus that pleads, heartbreakingly, ‘Please don’t leave me out of your plans.’ Yun’s vocals are a versatile instrument, pivoting from ethereal falsetto (“Loaded One”), to sassy staccato (“Heart Squeeze”), to, best of all, this wholehearted, head-thrown-back wail she showcases on ‘Fall Straight Back’ and ‘I Must Winter.’ And then there’s ‘Able To’ in all its glory: a chorus of unadorned imperatives (“Now is the time to distinguish yourself from previous ways that you have been living / Now is the time to relinquish yourself to future ways of precious forgiving”) followed by verses that ask, repeatedly, in intonations that vary ever-so-slightly, until you finally get the point, ‘Are you able to? / Are you? / Able? / To?’ This is a song that wants to cut the bullshit and ask you something very directly; it would use your first name if it could find a way to know it.”

Here’s the link to the article…enjoy!
