There is a lot going on this weekend around town and out of town. Here’s our Top 3 for the week! Scroll below the Top 3 to see a lot of other great happenings!
On Friday (6/17) the Shadowbox will present the debut of director/writer/producer Jason Eisener’s first full-length film, Hobo With a Shotgun! In a random train yard a hobo steps off a train with hopes of starting a new life. Quickly realizing this is a town where crime rules and justice drools he decides to take up the mantle of law. Armed with a pawn store shotgun and a fucked up set of morals he takes to the town to rid it of evil. Starting at at 8pm and only costing $5 this film is worth seeing more than once! The Shadowbox is located on Kirk Ave, downtown Roanoke.
On Sunday (6/19) the Missionaries will be hosting new friends from Baltimore, Small Sur! This show will take place at 1515 Roanoke Ave. with donations requested for the traveling group. Small Sur has garnered a lot of attention recently through their live shows and recordings with mentionings from blogs such as Tiny Mix Tapes to NPR to their own Baltimore City Paper. The Missionaries will also be playing that evening sharing their own blend of myth inspired folk. This show will start at 8pm, donations! On Saturday (6/18) the Dogtown Roadhouse in Floyd celebrates its 1 year anniversary! Starting at 11am and running all the way to midnight Dogtown will be bringing back some of their favorite bands and people throughout the last year to celebrate. Music for the evening includes Wyndy Hill Travelers, Grass Monkey and DJ Joneski! Come out and celebrate with Dogtown, pick up a wood fire oven pizza and one of the great microbrews on tap!

- Wednesday (6/15-26) Frogger (a play by Adam Hahn) directed by Cheryl Snodgrass. Studio Roanoke, downtown. 8pm.
- Saturday (6/18) Goodwill Falcon, Rugby and Nobles at the Bazaar. 9pm, $5.
- Tuesday (6/21) Gleaming the Cube at the Shadowbox. In celebration of “Go Skate Day”. 8pm, $5. All proceeds go to the Skateistan charity.

Tonight (Sunday, 1/9) Studio Roanoke’s own Guerrilla Playhouse will host two bands of great caliber. Roanoke favorite the Circus Practice will be performing and along with them will be a new band making their debut on the scene. Death Newman (comprised of Guerrilla Playhouse founder Ben R. Williams, the Bastard’s Doug Shelor, the Browning Brothers’ Ryan Browning and former 3AM Friday members Bentley & Austin Alderman and Sam Clifton) are a super cluster of friends gathered together to form the area’s only Randy Newman cover band. This is a sight to behold! Starting at 8pm and costing $5.
On Wednesday (1/12) the Bastard’s of Fate will be performing with Austin, TX friends Love’s It! The Texas duo consists of Vaughn Walters of the Shake ‘Em Ups and Jenny Parrott of the Shotgun Party (a personal favorite of our’s). This will be a donation-based basement show on Roanoke Ave starting around 7pm and ending around 10pm. Come out to see a Roanoke band that will blow you away and a Texas couple that will leave you smiling!
Friday (1/14) the Bazaar on Brandon Rd will host a Roanoke band coming back home after a two week venture away from home. Midair will be making this their second to last stop on their tour and playing with them will be Roanoke math rock band Nobles. Also playing is said to be Fine Linens although we are not for sure on that one. Either way this should be a fun show and its good to see the under 21 crowd making music and having something going on! This show starts at 8pm and costs $5.
Saturday (1/15) the Shadowbox on Kirk Ave downtown will host a Golden Girls sleepover party!!!! Starting at 8pm and running all night for 12 consecutive hours til 8am this is the Shadowbox’s way of saying “thank you for being a friend”. Be sure to bring a sleeping bag and a pillow. DID WE MENTION THERE WAS FREE CHEESECAKE?!?!?
Also on Saturday the 15th the Unicorn Stables Project: Studios & Gallery will host an exhibit entitled “Shrines & Other Things”. Over twenty artists will be showing pieces depicting their view of shrines through video, installation, sculpture, painting and poetry. There will be a projection show by Mateo Marquez and music spinning all throughout the evening. This opening starts at 8pm with poetry reading starting at 8:30pm. Admission is FREE.
There is a lot going on Saturday the 15th and the Bazaar is offering yet another choice with Roanoke punk/folk outfit Watershed Conspiracy. Opening the show will be Tallahassee, FL group Only Thieves. This show will start at 9pm, $5. Come out to hoot and holler!

Happy Holidays to everyone from Scenic Recovery! First off we’d like to announce and congratulate the winners of the Scenic Recovery/ Planting Seeds Records record/CD giveaway. Tonight (Wednesday, Dec 22nd) community microcinema the Shadowbox presents a “Kung Fu Christmas” by showing kung fu cult film “Crippled Masters”. This 1979 film uses two actual handicapped actors playing the parts of two students disgraced and crippled by their evil master. The duo team up to combine their advantages against the former master. Starring Mu Chuan Chen and Jackie Conn this film starts at 7pm. Don’t miss it!
On Tuesday (Dec. 28th) the Bazaar on Brandon Rd will host a showcase by Virginia/North Carolina based label, Personal Records. The label focuses on releasing mostly cassettes of experimental folk from a close collection of friends. The “Personal Records Showcase” will feature bands from the label’s roster including the Delta Function, Arte Povera, Miles Nighthawk and Nobles. This show will start at 8pm sharp with Arte Povera and Nobles playing shorter sets. All ages and only $5!
On Wednesday December 29th the Shadowbox will be hosting Philosophy INC’s Holiday Special. Philosophy INC is a Roanoke based post-capitol media group focusing on documenting many of the facets of Roanoke’s underground art culture. This special will highlight some of those videos as well as provide local entertainment, holiday music, presentations from foreign dignitaries and more! This celebration starts at 7pm.
To round up our post we give you Kirk Avenue Music Hall’s send off to 2010. “Flight 2011: Nonstop Flight New Year’s” is taking place at Kirk’s newest venture, the Sanctuary. This event will promise a great evening full of music, activities and fun. The evening will be complete with pilots, stewardess servers, passport photos, a cocktail cash bar. Music will be provided by the awesome sounds of the Circus Practice and mainstream rockers My Radio. Be sure to dress in your best 60s mod attire and bring $5 extra for the in flight fun pack. This evening starts at 9pm, 21 and up only and will cost you a cool $30.
