On Friday (8/12) the Shadowbox located on Kirk Avenue is showing a film I’m very excited about. “Trollhunter” is a Norwegian film by writer/director André Øvredal filmed all over the stunning countryside of Norway. Its action, horror, cheeze, comedy, fantasy and amazing landscapes all combined together to form a spectacle! This is a one-time only showing starting at 8pm and only costs you $5! GO SEE IT!
Also this Friday the Bazaar is hosting the John Barry Conception and Jordan Fallon. This should be a great evening with two very talented folk acts. Since this is a local show you get to experience the magic for just $3. So come out to the Bazaar on Brandon Ave. at 9pm!
On Saturday (8/13) the Shadowbox is showing 1980’s hip hop documentary, “Style Wars”. Directed by Tony Silver this film was famous for winning the Grand Prize for Documentary at Sundance in ’83 and infamous for helping street art expand to all corners of the globe! Come and check out this incredible landmark for hip hop culture and get there early to see Stevie D of Illbotz and Joneski perform before the feature. This is a benefit showing to help raise enough money to restore the documentary’s original print and get it on Blu Ray format! Starts at 8pm!
Also on Saturday the Bazaar welcomes two great local acts! Roanoke DJ and lyricist Joneski performs his amazing verbal assault over beats! Marshall Hicks & His Bag of Tricks will blow you away with his multi-instrumental one man band! Two awesome local acts for just $3! This show starts at 9pm.
Saturday in Charlottesville the Twisted Branch Tea Bazaar welcome James McNew of Yo La Tengo to their stage. Presented by Holy Smokes Booking and WTJU this show headlines McNew who is touring with his project called DUMP. Also playing will be Sloppyheads and Girl Choir. This show will start at 8:30pm and only costs $8.
On Sunday (8/14) Studio Roanoke’s Guerrilla Playhouse will host the Missionaries with Richmond’s Nick Coward & the Last Battle. Coward and group are known for their soothing instrumentation and a melodies that catches within the first listen. Magic Twig Community band the Missionaries will be debuting two new members to the fold and offering songs with stories behind them. Come out this Sunday evening start at 8pm. Studio Roanoke is located on Campbell Ave in downtown Roanoke across from the bus station.

With a lot of stuff going on this week its hard to choose between them all. Here’s a listing of just a few great happenings starting with the Top 3!
On Thursday (6/23) Magic Twig Community flagship band the Sad Cobras play at the Bazaar. Opening for the Cobras will be Birmingham, Alabama band, the Grenadines. Come out, pick up a Cobras/ Hot Lava 7″ and introduce yourself to another great new band making their way through Roanoke! This show starts at 8pm and costs $5!
In Blacksburg on Friday (6/24) She-Sha will host a fond farewell to the Blind Photographers. AK Kanode’s brand of dance pop has built quite the popular following in Blacksburg over the past couple of years. Now Amy plans to head to the Northwest but doesn’t want to leave without one last show. Playing with her will be Harrisonburg dance duo, Mirror Kisses. Fronted by a former band member of Amy’s (George Clanton) Mirror Kisses is new wave the way it was intended and is one of our favorites! Above is a video for Mirror Kisses “Haunt Me”.
On Saturday (6/25) the Bazaar will host its 3rd installment of “the Bazaar Presents” at Kirk Avenue Music Hall. Richmond band and Triple Stamp Records flagship Homemade Knives will be headlining. Providing support will be Roanoke bands Red Clay River and Magic Twig Community outfit, the Missionaries. This is an important show not only for the Bazaar but also for Red Clay River who will be performing for the last time. Come and bid Red Clay River a proper farewell and enjoy an evening with friends! This show starts at 8pm and costs $7!

This post marks Scenic Recovery’s 1 year anniversary! We’re just as surprised as you that we’ve stuck around this long but I’ll tell you one thing, we have no intention of stopping! We have a little surprise give away for you folks thanks to our friends at Planting Seeds Records but first let’s see what’s happening around town this week…
On Friday Dec. 17th the Bastards of Fate share the evening with Roanoke rapping sensation Joneski and Baltimore based DJ Erock! The Just Embrace Love Please gallery will be hosting the event in honor of soon to be former Roanoker and Alaska bound Mary May. This evening will be starting at 9pm with Joneski opening, DJ Erock spinning between sets and the Bastards of Fate bringing it all to a close. Just Embrace Love Please is located on the corner of 1st St. and Kirk Ave. downtown Roanoke.
Also that Friday (17th) the Blues BBQ downtown will host the Browning Brothers for the later part of your evening. Brothers Matt & Ryan Browning will be playing their blend of folk/roots/country starting at 10pm and going late. 21 and up only, free admission!
On Saturday Dec. 18th the Bazaar will host Lynchburg folk act Nick Coward & the Last Battle and singer/songwriter/ Mild Winter member Ben Schlabach. Over the course of the Bazaar’s existence the Lynchburg based group has become a favorite amongst attendees. This will be Nick Coward and the gang’s last show for a while so make sure to come out and check out this great set of musicians from the Hill City. The show starts at 9pm, $5.
Also on Saturday local Roanoke artist, DJ, musician Dickie Eikcid will be hosting his second Glow Party at his Just Embrace Love Please studio/ gallery. Starting at 9pm and going late the Glow Party 2 will feature: Magnetic, Fiyah, Fishstick and Chickin Wing, Andre Da Beast, Uncommonwealth and DJ Illswaggga. This gathering is a part of the Above Ground Club Movement.
