We here at Scenic Recovery have been very busy talking and planning with future partnerships we’re very excited about but don’t want to reveal just yet! With that said and now that we have your attention, here are this week’s Top 3!!!
On Friday (8/06) Roanoke band the Situationist headlines a show at the Bazaar with Atlanta’s the Seventh Ring of Saturn. The evening is set to start at 9pm and is $5 at the door. Above is a video for of the Situationist playing two of our favorite songs by them; “Chestnut Tree Cafe” and “Yellow House” live at the Bazaar.
On Saturday (8/06) a venue that Roanoke’s underground scene hasn’t seen in many years opens its doors back up to the possibility of a new venue. The Horseshoe hosts Roanoke’s own Heevahava as the headliner for the bill. Also playing will be Asheville’s Enoch. Opening the show are the six illegitimate sons of Randy Newman, Death Newman. Come out and support this possible new venue for bands in Roanoke and make it happen again! The Horseshoe is located on 1641 9th St., SE. Starting at 8:30pm and costing $5 for three bands. This is a 21 and up venue only.
Opening on August 10th and running through August 21st Studio Roanoke present “Man With Wings”, a play by Ben R. Williams and directed by Kenley Smith. For more details about the run visit Studio Roanoke online. Here’s a synopsis of the play…
“In 1971, a small-town sheriff bears witness to a tragic and inexplicable event. Forty years later, a free-lance writer and investigator of unexplained phenomena arrives at the sheriff’s run-down apartment, desperate to learn the truth behind the so-called “Thunderbird Incident.” But the answer the sheriff offers may not be what the writer hoped for; the truth may be worse by far.”

This Sundayy (7/3) the Shadowbox on Kirk Ave. will be showing the comedy/horror film “Rubber”. Following the story of a telepathic killer tire named Robert this film has been hailed by critics all over the country. Come and see what this odd storyline is all about this Sunday at 8pm!
Also this Friday the Bazaar on Brandon hosts the Situationist fresh off their tour! Playing with the Situationist will be Charlottesville band the Virgo 9 and Heevahava’s own Mark Perry doing a set of solo songs. This show is set to start at 9pm and will only cost $5. On Thursday (6/30) 101.5 the (not so local) Music Place hosts a night at Kirk Avenue Music Hall. Roanoke rockers My Radio share the evening with English modern rock outfit, Scars on 45. Doors open at 7:30pm with Scars on 45 opening at 8pm. Half price tickets are offered with student ID.

Wednesday (4/27) the Bazaar presents something Kirk Avenue Music Hall has never quite experienced before! San Francisco one-man/robot band Captured By Robots comes to Kirk Avenue with support from local favorites, the Bastards of Fate and Illbotz. The second in a series of the Bazaar presents this is sure to be one hell of a show! Come and witness a milestone of shock and awe on Wednesday night! This show starts at 8pm and costs $7 for three great bands. Also on Friday the 29th the Bastards will venture to Blacksburg to play Gillie’s with Janus 4-14. That show starts at 8pm and is free for all!
On Saturday (4/30) in Blacksburg local venue the Tub will host the Bash of Mustache. Rumored to play (but not yet formally announced) are Maya Renfro and Hoop Dreams (ex members of Wild Nothing). Starting at noon and running all day, mustaches are encouraged.
Continuing on to the second of Saturday’s events is Studio Roanoke fundraiser “High Ball/Low Ball”. Starting at 7pm in the Cambria Suite there will be food, drinks, jazz by William Penn and readings from excerpts of “Zombie Boyfriend”. $35 for single and $55 for double. Later on that evening at Studio Roanoke there will be live music from four great Roanoke bands. On the bill are Death Newman, the Situationist, Another Roadside Attraction and the Bastards of Fate. The show alone is $10 (and well worth it)! The show itself starts at 10pm.
Rounding out Saturday’s events is Troutville-based band Dog Day South at the Bazaar. Dog Day South is a blend of blues, jam band and southern rock. Starting at 9pm and only costing you $5 you should make it a point to head out to this show!

Truly, history has a lot to teach us about the roots of our radicalism. When we remember that people were shot so we could have the 8-hour day; if we acknowledge that homes with families in them were burned to the ground so we could have Saturday as part of the weekend; when we recal…l 8-year old victims of industrial accidents who marched in the streets protesting working conditions and child labor only to be beat down by the police and company thugs, we understand that our current condition cannot be taken for granted – people fought for the rights and dignities we enjoy today, and there is still a lot more to fight for. The sacrifices of so many people can not be forgotten or we’ll end up fighting for those same gains all over again. This is why we celebrate May Day.
On May 1, 1886, more than 300,000 workers in 13,000 businesses across the United States walked off their jobs in the first May Day labor celebration in history. In Chicago, the epicenter for the 8-hour day agitators, 40,000 went out on strike with the anarchists in the forefront of the public’s eye. With their fiery speeches and revolutionary ideology of direct action, anarchists and anarchism became respected and embraced by the working people and despised by the capitalists.
Today we see tens of thousands of activists embracing the ideals of the Haymarket Martyrs and those who established May Day as an International Workers’ Day. Ironically, May Day is an official holiday in 66 countries and unofficially celebrated in many more, but rarely is it recognized in this country where it began

On Wednesday (4/13) downtown Roanoke holds it’s annual Down by Downtown (DxDT) music festival. A more than obvious rip-off of South by SouthWest (SxSW) this schedule will mostly showcase cover acts, beach music and jam circuit bands. Why are we covering it then? Also on Wednesday (4/13) Bazaar Consignments will host Philly band Kelly & the Ruths. Also playing the show will be Roanoke locals the John Barry Conception. This will be a fun night of great pop and folk for all to enjoy. Come out and have a listen! What else are you going to do on a Wednesday night? Starting at 8pm, $5.
On Friday (4/15) if you have a bike and want to enjoy the warm weather with a bunch of other riders then join Doin Good in the Hood: An Alleycat Race. Meeting at GET Coffee & Bubble Tea this is an open invitation bike race for riders of all skill levels. This will be a cross-town race consisting of six stops determined the day of the event including a cash prize for the winner to cross the finish line with signatures from all six locations. There’s a $5 entry fee and registration starts at 6pm with the race kicking off at 7pm. Post race competitions will include a skid competition, trick competition and track stand competitions. There will be a free show after for all racers ($5 for everyone else) featuring Roanoke hardcore band the February Man. Necessities for the evening will be your bike, lock and a pen for those signatures. Helmets are strongly encouraged. Also feel free to bring cookout materials for the after party! Invite your friends out!
Also on Friday the O. Winston Link Museum will present Glen McClure’s Dominion Derby Girls. This exhibit will focus on individual portraits of members from the Hampton Roads area roller derby team. The opening reception will feature Roanoke’s own roller derby team, the Star City Roller Girls. Starting at 7pm this event is $5 for general audiences and free for museum members. At 7:30pm photographer Glen McClure will be interviewed in the Beyond the Frame segment of the evening. This opening will take place in the Trackside Gallery area of the museum.

This Wednesday (3/9) local vintage clothing store Freckles will host “Crafting for a Cause”! This craft night will be focused on decorating shoes in support of Planned Parenthood’s “Right to Shoes” auction taking place on March 31st. Freckles encourages you to submit a pair of decorated shoes for the Planned Parenthood sponsored evening. Anyone who does submit a pair will receive two tickets to the auction and recognition at the event. So come on down to Freckles on Wednesday at 7pm, BYOB, a pair of shoes and have some fun! Freckles is located in the back of GET, the new coffee shop on Kirk Avenue.
Later that evening on Wednesday the Bazaar brings you one of the most anticipated pairings of the year! The hard rocking six sons of Randy Newman known as Death Newman pair with a mysterious new band. PLUGGGG will be making their debut performance and will hopefully be performing a few of those hits I’ve had the pleasure of hearing recently. Come on down to the Bazaar on Wednesday the 9th at 8pm to celebrate THE BAZAAR’S 100TH SHOW! This show is FREE for everyone!
On Thursday (3/10) the Roanoke Public Library downtown presents An Island, a film by Vincent Moon. Film maker Vincent Moon is known for his Take Away Shows series which features prominent bands and artists within the independent music community performing in intimate settings all throughout the world. This full-length feature focuses on the band Efterklang performing in various parts of an island off the Danish coast. Brought to you in partnership with the Shadowbox this film is to start at 6:30pm on the mezzanine of the library. There will also be free Shadowbox ticket giveaways at the showing. Come out to this and see an amazing group perform in the most intimate of settings.
On Friday (3/11) the Awful Arthur’s at Towers Shopping Center presents rapper Bubba Sparxxx. Continuing their reputation of bringing us great music to the Roanoke area this show will also feature local comedy-rap legends the Illbotz. Also playing the show will be the Soul Elements. Starting at 9pm this show should not be missed!
Also on Friday the Bazaar on Brandon Rd. hosts the Bastards of Fate with the Situationist and North Carolina band, Minor Stars. This will be one hell of a show featuring two incredible Roanoke acts and a great traveling band. Starting at 9pm this show will cost you only $5.
Rounding out the list of things going on Friday is Paleface with Mo at the Dogtown Roadhouse in Floyd. The Americana duo will be bringing their own blend of melody with an added percussive element, Monica “Mo” Salamot. Taking place at the Sun Music Hall in Dogtown this show starts at 9pm.
On Saturday (3/12) the Just Embrace Love Please (JELP) Gallery and Studio will throw what looks to be their last event. The Dub Step Party will feature DJ RahBee, MachineMadeMan, TheExit, MurdaSound, Daniel Noell and Castiel. Starting at 7:30pm and going til late, come out!
On Sunday (3/13) at Studio Roanoke the John Barry Conception will play with local singer/songwriter Sharayah Spears as a part of the Guerrilla Playhouse series . This show will start at 7:30pm and will cost you $5. Make sure to come out and support Studio Roanoke and two great local acts!
Ending our list of things to do this week is the Shadowbox’s premiere of the Parking Lot Movie. This documentary tells the story of the infamous Corner Parking Lot in Charlottesville, VA and the employees who have worked there. If you’ve ever been to the former Satellite Ballroom or surrounding area chances are you’ve parked there. Very funny and entertaining this documentary features interviews from current and former employees including Yo La Tengo member James McNew (yes, he was a former employee there). This film starts at 8pm on Tuesday the 15th.
This Tuesday (Feb. 8th) the downtown Roanoke Public Library will feature another installment of their series Emerging Artists, this time in collaboration with multimedia group “mediumless“. Mediumless is a collective of Lynchburg artists from different backgrounds ranging from photography to play writing. This event will take place on the Howery Mezzanine with Lynchburg instrumental surf rock band Alaska providing the music. The evening will showcase mediumless members Rhonda Glick, Jake Siner and John Gosslee. This event starts at 6pm costing you nothing and providing you with free refreshments!
Also on Tuesday is another great show at the Bazaar! Roanoke locals the Situationist head the bill while Rochester, NY group Attic Abasement opens. This is a great pairing of bands and should not be missed! Starting at 9pm this show only costs $5, perfect timing for those who are also attending the library event. Catch two shows in one day! Written and directed by Kenley Smith this play serves as the third and final part in a trilogy of plays by Smith shown at Studio Roanoke. On Thursday (Feb. 10th) Grandin Village restaurant Surf N Turf Grill will host a poetry slam. Starting at 9pm this will be a competition… for poetry. Hey its $20 to whoever wins out of three rounds! So who cares, go tell some poetry and win some cash. That $20 could go toward a crabby paddie or a couple of nice tall pints from one of their many taps! Get there early to sign up and review the slam rules.
Also on Thursday is a show to be excited about… in Charlottesville. Blacksburg’s Wild Nothing is sharing the bill with L.A. group Abe Vigoda at the Trinity Irish Pub. Both bands were voted in the Top 50 albums of 2010 by Pitchfork. Opening the show will be Blacksburg’s Hoop Dreams featuring former members of Wild Nothing. Presented by Charlottesville based promotional group Holy Smokes. Doors open at 7:30pm.
On Friday (Feb. 11th) the Bazaar hosts two out of town acts. Richmond’s Ryan B. & the Dead Sea and Uncle Bengine & the Restraining Orders. Come out for a night of folk, roots and rock starting at 9pm and costing you $5!
Also at the Bazaar on Saturday (Feb. 12th) is Roanoke group the John Barry Conception. Opening for the guys will be South Carolinian singer/songwriter Julie Slonecki. This is sure to be quite the fun show featuring a Roanoke band you don’t get to see quite as much. Make sure to come out early in order to catch both acts! This show starts at 9pm and costs $5.
On Sunday (Feb. 13th) the Shadowbox is showing what some consider to be the definitive Jean-Luc Godard film. Breathless (A Bout de Souffle) is a film about a boy from Paris involved in a life of crime and a girl from America oblivious to his dark side. When she discovers what he’s been up to the relationship starts to crumble and turns to betrayal. Truly a masterpiece and one of the gems of the French New Wave film period! Make sure you make it out to see this one! Starting at 8pm and running til 9:30pm.
That same Sunday at Martin’s Downtown is the Illbotz CD release party! Celebrating their newest album titled “Pudding is Delicious” this show will feature Roanoke heavyweights the Bastards of Fate. Also playing will be Richmond pirate party band Craptain Jack & the Schmees. The Illbotz will be selling their new CDs, shirts, stickers, pudding and prison tattoos! Starting at 9pm, don’t miss it!
Some call him odd, others call him drunk but most call him Roanoke filmmaker Charles E. Cullen. Join the host of local public access show “Chicken Chat” as he presents to you the “Theatre of Doom”. Along with Cullen and company will be local magician/illusionist Nelson Oliver. Described as a “two hour decent into madness” don’t miss this show! Taking place this Sunday (Feb. 13th) at Studio Roanoke’s Guerrilla Playhouse at 8pm, $5!
Charlottesville radio station WTJU 91.1FM will be holding its annual week long fundraiser starting February 14th and running til February 20th. The “2011 WTJU Rock Marathon” will feature not only blocks of different genres of pop rock but will also give tribute to essential labels and artists throughout the decades. Also this week will feature a different Charlottesville area band playing live in studio every night! The bands playing live in studio will be Borrowed Beams of Light, Andrew Cedermark, Left & Right, Dzian!, Sarah White & the Pearls, Cosair and Invisible Hand.
On Valentine’s Day the Unicorn Stables Project present to you the “Valentine’s Day Art Extravaganza”! The evening will include classical Greek Mythology drawing of live models from 7:30-9pm and a party from 9pm til 11pm. Throughout the evening you can expect glitter, performance, crafts, contests, music, treats, love and dancing! Some fun activities include a toast with Bacchus, an anti-Valentine’s Day celebration in the “Hades Room”, body-building tips from Greek heroes and trying to score Aphrodite’s number. Welcome to December everyone! Get ready for a huge list of events this month to keep you entertained when you’re not attending those Christmas parties…
On Thursday (Dec. 2nd) local consignment shop/ venue the Bazaar is hosting Charlottesville band Birdlips and Roanoke’s own the Situationist. This show will be awesome so make sure not to miss it! Starting at 8pm and costing you $5 the line-up is well worth it. Check out the above video of Birdlips performing their song “Powerlines” live in San Francisco, CA.
On Saturday (Dec. 4th) Hollins University throws their annual folk fest now titled “Beyond Folkfest 2010”. The festival is in celebration of the end of the semester and will feature several bands from around the country as well as Roanoke. Slotted to play are the Dead Sea, Michael, Jordyn and Greg, Caitlin Watkins, Roanoke’s very own the Bastards of Fate and DJ Kimchi. Beyond Folkfest starts at 2pm and runs til 6pm, a bit shorter than past years with fewer bands but let’s hope they keep up the tradition! $3 for Hollins students and $5 for everyone else.
After Beyond Folkfest on Saturday (Dec. 4th) the Bazaar will host Richmond rockers Long Arms with Magic Twig folk group the Missionaries. Long Arms features former River City High/Fun Size member James Menefee. This show starts at 9pm and costs $5. Also on Saturday (Dec. 4th) Blacksburg’s XYZ Gallery hosts Blacksburg dream poppers Hoop Dreams. The show is a benefit for the XYZ Gallery with more bands to be announced. This show starts at 7:30pm and runs til 10pm.
On Monday (Dec. 6th) the Shadowbox microcinema will present five short films exploring the topic of AIDS. Focusing mostly on the lives of gay men dealing with AIDS from many different angles these five films range from satirical to serious. Some films include Lost Cause, RSVP, Deaf Heaven and Relax. These showings are free and start at 7pm with doors opening and refreshments provided at 6:30pm. Donations are appreciated to benefit the Drop In Center.
On Wednesday (Dec. 8th) the Bazaar hosts Seattle based World History with Roanoke favorite Another Roadside Attraction. Starting at 8pm and costing $5 this is a show you should check out, what else is happening on a Wednesday night? On Thursday (Dec. 9th) the Bazaar will have Charlottesville duo Veelee alongside Roanoke Magic Twig duo Eternal Summers. On Friday (Dec. 10th) Roanoke hip hop allstars the Illbotz will be sharing the stage with MC/DJ extraordinaire Joneski at the Village Grill. Starting at 9pm and going til last call Joneski and the Illbotz are going dropping beats and rhymes for your entertainment. On Saturday (Dec. 11th) local fashion and pin-up photography company the Pretty Pistols is throwing a dance party at the Shadowbox! “Dirty Dozen’s Dance Party & Calendar Release” celebrates the release of the 2011 local pin-up photography calendar. Music will be provided by DJ trio DANGER FANGS! (Turbo P, DJ Felix Leiter and DJ Shady Hawkins). Be sure to bring canned food and donations for Toy for Tots for a chance to win a raffle prize. There will be a sneak peak of the Bang Bang Burlesque Troop and the new 2011 calendar will be specially priced for $15 for event night only. Starting at 7:30pm and running til after midnight this event will cost $7 at the door.
Also on Saturday (Dec. 11th) Blues BBQ Co. Downtown is putting on a free show for those who are 21 and up! Two great local bands the Circus Practice and Another Roadside Attraction will be playing from 9:30pm til 1am for your entertainment! Also on Saturday the 11th Roanoke allstars Grass Monkey play Awful Arthur’s Downtown. Starting at 10pm and going late the boys will be running through a set full of new songs, reworkings of old ones and a tighter set all around. Head downtown, grab a drink and have listen!
On Sunday (Dec. 12th) the Shadowbox is showing Christmas classic Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. The children’s favorite narrated by legend Burl Ives will show at 2pm. Bring the kids! Above is a classic TV spot for the special.
And finally to round up our list of happenings is the Shadowbox’s presentation of I’m Still Here. Starring the on edge Joaquin Phoenix and directed by Casey Affleck this “documentary” explores the actor’s career change into rap. Everyone is curious about this film so fill that curiosity and go see it on Monday the 13th at 7pm.
On Wednesday, Sept. 29th the Grandin Theatre will be showing the latest project from local filmmakers Jim & Cathy Crawford. Urban Lots, Garden Plots follows Jim & Cathy as they install an organic garden in their vacant city lot. The film will also follow 5 other Roanoke urban gardeners and their experiences. Tickets for this event are $10 at the door with half the proceeds going toward L.E.A.P. (Local Environmental Agriculture Project) helping spread urban gardens throughout the city. Children 13 and under get in free! The film premieres at the Grandin starting at 7:30pm.
On Saturday October 2nd the “En Plein Air” Festival will be taking place at Highland Park and neighboring art space, the Water Heater. Music combines with outdoor/indoor activities welcoming in Fall with an all day event starting at 2pm. Music will include Avail front man turned folk songster, Tim Barry. Adding to the musical side of the evening will be fellow Richmonder Josh Small and Red Clay River member Marcus Hodges performing under his moniker, Extinctions. Below is a list of activities…

Monday October 4th the Shadowbox located on Kirk Ave will be showing the documentary film, A Gift For The Village. The film is based around seven people from the Blue Ridge area and their trip to Nepal to deliver a painting of a man sitting atop a mountain above a small village. After completing the film the crew went back to Nepal and showed the footage. Now coming to the Blue Ridge the film starts at 6pm.
Continuing on to Tuesday October 5th the Shadowbox prepares for Halloween with a showing that is not only rare but quite possibly the best of the bad zombie movies ever made! Hard Rock Zombies is a tale of a hard working and touring rock band coming to play a small town. After picking up an attractive hitchhiker they decide to bunk with her folks while they stay in the town. Little do they know the dark secrets the family has in store for them… and the world! Featuring an awesome soundtrack including the movie’s own hit “Cassie” and a slew of baddies including an aging Hitler, a werewolf Eva Braun, midget members of the SS and more! This film is not to be missed for the cult classic fan!
Arguably one of the best of the supernatural slasher films Dario Argento’s Suspiria is coming to the Shadowbox on Wednesday October 6th. Centered around witchcraft, Argento’s signature flare for gore, and one of the creepiest theme songs of the horror genre this film will engrave itself into you memory for years to come! Continuing the Shadowbox’s celebration of the Halloween by coming out to this horror classic. The showing starts at 8pm.
On Saturday Oct. 9th a section of 4th St. between Washington & Albemarle will be blocked off to traffic and open to the public for chalk art. Marisol’s Chalk Extravaganza will start around 11AM and will accept donations to benefit RAM House, a homeless children’s charity. Marisol also offers you to bring your lunch and dine on the street. Bring guitars, banjos, harmonicas, shakers or whatever music makers you can muster to add to the fun! This event will take place in Old SouthWest on 4th St. Don’t miss it!! Fun for the whole family!
On Sunday Oct. 10th Magic Twig Community mini folk orchestra the Missionaries will be playing Guerrilla Playhouse at Studio Roanoke. Continuing in the spirit of Guerrilla Playhouse and featuring NPR personality AuntMama come and experience the performing arts merging from two different perspectives. Live drama meets live music in a period of just two short hours. Starting at 8pm this event will only cost you $5.
Sunday October 10th Lynchburg band Steal The Prize hosts an event at the Elks Lodge on Old Mill Road in their hometown. Tattoo Band Jam will feature tattoos (a given), piercing, food, beer and plenty of vendors. Lynchburg bands featured on the bill are Spuknof, Steal The Prize and singer/songwriter Blake Reams. Charlottesville band Invisible Hand joins the bill along with Roanoke’s own The Situationist. This event starts at 3pm so if you want that tattoo you’ve been thinking about this is a good opportunity to get it! Even if you have no interest in tattoos or piercings let us assure you the bands, food and beer are worth going for alone! Costing you only $10 this event will give you a whole day of entertainment!
Now that August is done and September is here we’re going to give you a humble list of ways to spend your last few moments with summer!
Tomorrow (Friday, 9/3) the Shadowbox will present a film very close to many in this mountain community. “Coal Country” is a documentary film about the evils of mountaintop removal for the benefit of coal mining. Following the film will be group discussions with members of the Southern Appalachian Mountain Stewards (SAMS) who will also talk about their campaign to save Ison Rock Ridge in Wise County, VA. Proceeds will help with transportation of peoples to the Appalachia Rising mobilization in D.C. Showing starts at 7pm.
On Friday (9/3) the Sad Cobras return with best buds the Bastards of Fate at the Bazaar! Also playing is Athens, Georgia’s one-man band, the Visitations. The Cobras will be playing a ton of new material and word on the street is the Bastards have a few tricks up their collective sleeve as well! Come out one and all! The Bazaar has yet another awesome show the very next day, Saturday (9/4) with a hefty yet worthy line-up! Roanoke favorites the Situationist will be playing and opening for them will be Nancy & 2 Meteors front man, Just Marshall. Along for the ride will be Nashville solo artist Betty Rats and Chicago-based Monadnoc. This show will start at 9pm and will only cost you $5 for four great acts!
To round up our weekend of events come spend Labor Day the way it should be spent; with buddies, hot dogs, burgers, water balloons and America! Come down to Fishburn Park on Monday (9/6) for a whole day’s worth of fun! Hosting this great day of American tradition will be local Roanoke artist (and Scenic Recovery favorite) Stephen Smith! Remember to bring food for yourself and others, don’t forget water balloons or any other outdoor toys you may have, dress for the weather and don’t forget sunblock! The day will start around noon and oh what a day it will be!
Hello everyone! Rounding up this last full week in August is a MASSIVE amount of events to keep you busy until September putting away your “there’s nothing to do here” blues.
Starting this busy week will be an event hosted by the Roanoke Main Library downtown. River Laker will present Comic Strip to Graphic Novel; Will Eisner’s Painful Journey. The event will consist of a panel discussion based around comic art and its move from the funny papers to full on volumes of graphic novels. The panel will put a special focus on the work of Will Eisner, beloved creator of The Spirit comics. The panel will consist of host and local Eisner biographer Paul E. Fitzgerald, Roanoke Times reporter/ former blogger Mason Adams and B&D Comics owner Terry Baucum. This event will take place Tuesday, August 24th on the Howery Mezzanine at 6:30pm. It is free to the public and light refreshments will be provided.
Continuing on to Wednesday the Shadowbox presents French film classic from 1966 “Umbrellas of Cherbourg”. The film stars Catherine Deneuve and Nino Castelnuovo with direction by Jacques Demy (“Lola”, “the Seven Deadly Sins”) . This film starts at 8pm.
Friday (August 27th) the Shadowbox continues to show their love for great cinema by presenting one of Charlie Chaplin’s last silent films. “City Lights” stars Chaplin in arguably his most famous role, the “Little Tramp”. Come out and witness this masterpiece from 1931. The film starts at 8pm.
Also on Friday the Magic Twig Community’s the Young Sinclairs will be hosting a show in their own studio with Lynchburg friends, Steal the Prize. The show will take place around 9pm at the MTC’s Mystic Fortress on Cleveland. This show/ gathering is donation based so come out and help Steal the Prize put some gas in their tank! For those of you who can’t make it on Friday the Sinclairs will be joining Steal the Prize in Lynchburg on Saturday. The two groups will be performing at Rivermont Pizza around 7pm.
Saturday join the Shadowbox in celebrating one of the greatest cult classics of all time. “Caddyshack” (starring Chevy Chase, Bill Murray and Rodney Dangerfield) has been a movie quoter’s favorite for a couple of decades now. Come out early to play 9 hole putt putt and don’t forget to dress up in your best golfing attire! Best outfit gets a prize! The evening starts at 7pm.
This Sunday Dickie and the gang will be throwing the last show at Happy’s Flea Market. Fear not though, Dickie has relocated his gallery to the corner of Kirk and 2nd downtown. The Happy’s show will feature the Situationist, Nancy & Two Meteors, Heevahava, Thresher and the Virgo. Show starts at 7pm, is all ages and will only cost you $5!
Ending the month of August will be a Shadowbox showing of Japanese horror film, “Audition”. Don’t miss this startling and cleverly crafted psychological drama from one of Japan’s best shock directors, Takashi Miike. The film shows Monday the 30th at 8pm.
On Saturday (8/06) a venue that Roanoke’s underground scene hasn’t seen in many years opens its doors back up to the possibility of a new venue. The Horseshoe hosts Roanoke’s own Heevahava as the headliner for the bill. Also playing will be Asheville’s Enoch. Opening the show are the six illegitimate sons of Randy Newman, Death Newman. Come out and support this possible new venue for bands in Roanoke and make it happen again! The Horseshoe is located on 1641 9th St., SE. Starting at 8:30pm and costing $5 for three bands. This is a 21 and up venue only.
