the Bazaar, Pietasters @ Martin’s, Kirk Ave Music Hall

On Friday (9/16) the Bazaar hosts a great low key evening not to be missed! This show will feature Deedraye of the Sad Cobras playing a few selections of her own as well as some oldies. This intimately awesome evening will include Baltimore folk rock group Other Colors gracing the Bazaar with a set of tunes. Be sure to make it out to this show! Starting at 9pm and only costing $5.

On Saturday (9/17) Martin’s Downtown Bar & Grill will host punk-ska greats the Pietasters. Opening for the group will be the only remaining Roanoke punk-ska band, Jackal Tickets. This is a 21 and up show only! Tickets are $12 at the door and $10 in advance. Showtime is 10pm.

On Sunday (9/18) Kirk Avenue Music Hall hosts an all Roanoke show! The Circus Practice is set to headline with their own blend of instrumental surf rock. Lance Smith will also be performing with his group, Sinking Creek. Make sure to get there on time and witness the comic delight of the immortal Illbotz! Tickets are only $5, almost unheard of for the venue! Starting at 8pm, come out and support! P.S. also check out the Circus Practice at Dogtown Pizza in Floyd on Friday night!

This past weekend’s show were quite a blast and we hope you got a chance to get out to a few of them! Here’s what’s going on this week starting with our Top 3…

This Sundayy (7/3) the Shadowbox on Kirk Ave. will be showing the comedy/horror film “Rubber”. Following the story of a telepathic killer tire named Robert this film has been hailed by critics all over the country. Come and see what this odd storyline is all about this Sunday at 8pm!

Also this Friday the Bazaar on Brandon hosts the Situationist fresh off their tour! Playing with the Situationist will be Charlottesville band the Virgo 9 and Heevahava’s own Mark Perry doing a set of solo songs. This show is set to start at 9pm and will only cost $5. Check out our review of the Situationist’s newest E.P. under our Music Reviews page.

On Thursday (6/30) 101.5 the (not so local) Music Place hosts a night at Kirk Avenue Music Hall. Roanoke rockers My Radio share the evening with English modern rock outfit, Scars on 45. Doors open at 7:30pm with Scars on 45 opening at 8pm. Half price tickets are offered with student ID.

Bazaar Presents @ Kirk Ave, the Sad Cobras @ the Bazaar, Blind Photographers & Mirror Kisses @ She-Sha, Bazaar Commercial

With a lot of stuff going on this week its hard to choose between them all. Here’s a listing of just a few great happenings starting with the Top 3!

On Thursday (6/23) Magic Twig Community flagship band the Sad Cobras play at the Bazaar. Opening for the Cobras will be Birmingham, Alabama band, the Grenadines. Come out, pick up a Cobras/ Hot Lava 7″ and introduce yourself to another great new band making their way through Roanoke! This show starts at 8pm and costs $5!

In Blacksburg on Friday (6/24) She-Sha will host a fond farewell to the Blind Photographers. AK Kanode’s brand of dance pop has built quite the popular following in Blacksburg over the past couple of years. Now Amy plans to head to the Northwest but doesn’t want to leave without one last show. Playing with her will be Harrisonburg dance duo, Mirror Kisses. Fronted by a former band member of Amy’s (George Clanton) Mirror Kisses is new wave the way it was intended and is one of our favorites! Above is a video for Mirror Kisses “Haunt Me”.

On Saturday (6/25) the Bazaar will host its 3rd installment of “the Bazaar Presents” at Kirk Avenue Music Hall. Richmond band and Triple Stamp Records flagship Homemade Knives will be headlining. Providing support will be Roanoke bands Red Clay River and Magic Twig Community outfit, the Missionaries. This is an important show not only for the Bazaar but also for Red Clay River who will be performing for the last time. Come and bid Red Clay River a proper farewell and enjoy an evening with friends! This show starts at 8pm and costs $7!

Bazaar Presents at Kirk Avenue Musical Hall & more!!!

Wednesday (4/27) the Bazaar presents something Kirk Avenue Music Hall has never quite experienced before! San Francisco one-man/robot band Captured By Robots comes to Kirk Avenue with support from local favorites, the Bastards of Fate and Illbotz. The second in a series of the Bazaar presents this is sure to be one hell of a show! Come and witness a milestone of shock and awe on Wednesday night! This show starts at 8pm and costs $7 for three great bands. Also on Friday the 29th the Bastards will venture to Blacksburg to play Gillie’s with Janus 4-14. That show starts at 8pm and is free for all!

On Saturday (4/30) in Blacksburg local venue the Tub will host the Bash of Mustache. Rumored to play (but not yet formally announced) are Maya Renfro and Hoop Dreams (ex members of Wild Nothing). Starting at noon and running all day, mustaches are encouraged.

Continuing on to the second of Saturday’s events is Studio Roanoke fundraiser “High Ball/Low Ball”. Starting at 7pm in the Cambria Suite there will be food, drinks, jazz by William Penn and readings from excerpts of “Zombie Boyfriend”. $35 for single and $55 for double. Later on that evening at Studio Roanoke there will be live music from four great Roanoke bands. On the bill are Death Newman, the Situationist, Another Roadside Attraction and the Bastards of Fate. The show alone is $10 (and well worth it)! The show itself starts at 10pm.

Rounding out Saturday’s events is Troutville-based band Dog Day South at the Bazaar. Dog Day South is a blend of blues, jam band and southern rock. Starting at 9pm and only costing you $5 you should make it a point to head out to this show!

Rounding our list of events for the week is the Workers Solidarity Rally at the Martin Luther King bridge on Sunday. Below is a description of the event from the organizer’s Facebook page….

Truly, history has a lot to teach us about the roots of our radicalism. When we remember that people were shot so we could have the 8-hour day; if we acknowledge that homes with families in them were burned to the ground so we could have Saturday as part of the weekend; when we recal…l 8-year old victims of industrial accidents who marched in the streets protesting working conditions and child labor only to be beat down by the police and company thugs, we understand that our current condition cannot be taken for granted – people fought for the rights and dignities we enjoy today, and there is still a lot more to fight for. The sacrifices of so many people can not be forgotten or we’ll end up fighting for those same gains all over again. This is why we celebrate May Day.

On May 1, 1886, more than 300,000 workers in 13,000 businesses across the United States walked off their jobs in the first May Day labor celebration in history. In Chicago, the epicenter for the 8-hour day agitators, 40,000 went out on strike with the anarchists in the forefront of the public’s eye. With their fiery speeches and revolutionary ideology of direct action, anarchists and anarchism became respected and embraced by the working people and despised by the capitalists.

Today we see tens of thousands of activists embracing the ideals of the Haymarket Martyrs and those who established May Day as an International Workers’ Day. Ironically, May Day is an official holiday in 66 countries and unofficially celebrated in many more, but rarely is it recognized in this country where it began

Magic Twig Weekend & Shadowbox Prom!!!

This weekend looks to be a great one with some heavy hitting events happening around town! Let’s have a look at what’s going on…

 

This Thursday (3/24) Kirk Avenue Music Hall presents the Foghorn String Band. Hailing from Portland, Oregon this old time string band plays their own blend of pre-bluegrass styled country music that will keep your feet tapping. Their fiddler is worth experiencing alone! Opening the evening will be Roanoke’s own Rootstone Jug Band featuring former members of the New Roanoke Jug Band as well as members of the Young Sinclairs. This show is set to start at 8pm and will cost you $12 at the door, $6 for students.

 

On Friday (3/25) the Bazaar presents a Magic Twig Community showcase at Kirk Avenue Music Hall. The first in a series of monthly shows at Kirk put on by the Bazaar. This show will feature Magic Twig acts the Young Sinclairs, the Sad Cobras and Eternal Summers. Costing only $5, all ages and starting at 8pm. On Saturday (3/26) the Shadowbox celebrates its 1 year anniversary!!! The Shadowbox gang will be throwing a prom to beat any prom you ever attended in high school with a full bar! So think John Hughes and wear your best or worst prom attire. Stevie D of the Illbotz will be there providing the music for the evening so you know there will be plenty of great tunes to get you through the evening! Come out and celebrate with the Shadowbox at 8pm!

 

Also on Saturday in Blacksburg local hookah joint She-Sha is throwing a show not to be missed! Roanoke’s the Bastards of Fate headline a show featuring Blacksburg favorites the Blind Photographers, CBZL (pictured above) and Fire Foundation.  This show is free for all so make it a point to come out and have some fun! This show starts at 8:30pm.

St. Pattie’s Day and following weekend

On Wednesday (3/16) the Bazaar will host a triple header of a show. Ike As In Dwight’s co-captain Maya Renfro will be sharing the evening with fellow Blacksburg band Nash Smith & the Ganges and Fine Linens. This is a show to be excited about and what else do you have going on the night before St. Patrick’s Day? This show starts at 8pm and is only $5 for three bands.

 

Starting out our St. Patrick’s Day is Another Roadside Attraction at the Village Grill. This is a free show and knowing the ARA folks and the shows they put on… it should be a great evening! Not only will you get to see a great band but pitchers of PBR are only $5! Starting at 9:30pm and running late.

 

Also on Thursday Dogtown Roadhouse is throwing its own St. Pattie’s Day celebration. Roanoke nu-grass band Grass Monkey will be there drinking, fiddlin’, yelling, stomping and playing for your entertainment! So head on down to Dogtown, grab one of their great drafts & pizzas and go flat footin’ to Grass Monkey! Starting at 8pm.

 

Also at Dogtown on Friday is outlaw-country band JP Harris & the Tough Choices. These guys are out to set things straight and take back country music from those low life pop country superstars… I’m paraphrasing here. Starting at 9pm and running late this should be a drunken evening for all involved.

 

Also on Friday in Blacksburg the XYZ Gallery will host the Blind Photographers with Cumulonimbus. Promising to be quite a fun time full of dancing (at least by A.K. Kanode) and smooth melodies for all. This show starts at 7pm and only costs $3 with proceeds going toward a great cause! Also on Saturday (3/19) A.K. Kanode of the Blind Photographers will be DJing for the Baby Sean Fire Foundation at the Carlton-Scott Dance Dungeon. Also on board for the evening are the Manns, Tyler! and the Legendary Chris Meyers. Come out one and all!!!

 

On Saturday (3/19) the Bazaar hosts a folk show. Magic Twig Community folk orchestra the Missionaries will be sharing the evening with Asheville, NC band Uncle Mountain. The Missionaries will be splitting their set between Missionaries songs and Strange Birds songs (Jamie Booker’s folk project). Come out to the Bazaar and have a great time with us! Starting at 9pm and costing $5.

 

A bunch of great things coming up next week including the Bazaar’s first show at Kirk Avenue Music Hall!!!

Some good ways to spend the end of February!

On Wednesday (2/23) Roanoke local band Savannah Shoulders is set to perform acoustically on WSLS 10 at 12pm in promotion of their debut full-length “Another Light”. The following night the band will be performing at Kirk Avenue Music Hall in support of their album as a part of the High School Night performance series. This show is set to start at 7pm and costs $5.

 

This Thursday (2/24) the Surf N Turf Grill on Grandin Rd. will be hosting its second poetry slam. The rules will apparently be the same as they were before. Best out of three rounds of turns wins $20. Head on down to the Grandin Village on Thursday at 9pm to check out and try your hand at the poetry slam.

 

On Friday (2/25) the Bazaar on Brandon Rd. will host the Watershed Conspiracy with the Riverbank Ramblers. With both bands hailing from Roanoke this will be an all local all roots revival show. The two bands tend to take old time music and put a punk feel to it making it a bit modern with respect to the traditional. Come on down to the Bazaar and check out these two great groups! Starts at 9pm and will cost you $3 at the door.

 

Also on Friday (2/25) Roanoke locals Nancy & 2 Meteors headline a ska show at JELP Studio. Playing on the bill will be Bedford ska-punk band That Band With the Fat Kids and Richmond’s own ska/reggae group Murphy’s Kids. This show will be a good one for those lovers of ska still out there! The show starts at 9pm and serves as the opening of the JELP Art Gallery on Kirk & 1st, downtown.

 

In Blacksburg on Friday (2/25) local favorite Nash Smith & the Ganges celebrate the release of their newest cassette tape! Playing with them will be fellow Blacksburgers Samantha Mulder and DJ May. This show is taking place at Champ’s in downtown Blacksburg at 9pm.

 

On Saturday (2/26) Lynchburg two-piece the Late Virginia Summers headlines the Bazaar on Brandon Rd. With them will be Charlottesville’s Manorlady along with Boone, NC band Easy Company. Also playing will be Roanoke local turned Boone resident and Personal Records member, Arte Povera. This should be a good show for those who like ambient folk influenced music that’s a bit experimental to boot! This show starts at 9pm and costs $5.

 

On Sunday (2/27) Nancy & 2 Meteors score the classic Fritz Lang film “Metropolis” live at Studio Roanoke. Nancy will be putting a different spin on the film venturing away from the film’s original score. Come out to see this it will be a great time for all! Starts at 8pm, don’t be late!

On Thursday (1/27) the Blue Nile in Harrisonburg will play host to what looks to be a very exciting show. Harrisonburg/Norfolk-based Super Vacations will headline the show while Roanoke’s own Eternal Summers and Charlottesville’s Order. If you are in the area and can make it out I high suggest going. Order has been around for quite a while (2001 or so) and is amazing to see live. This show starts at 9pm.

 

Flannel Gurl Records will be having its last Flannel Friday show this Friday (1/28) at the unusual starting time of 5:15pm. The reason for the start time being so early is there are a lot of bands playing together on one bill. Eight bands on one bill to be exact. A couple of notables playing are Georgia’s the Emotron, Florida’s imadethismistake and Harrisonburg’s Buck Gooter. Why is this the final Flannel Friday? Rumor has it that Flannel Gurl Records is going to focus towards more label related functions. Come out to a last hurrah of sorts this Friday in Blacksburg at Jax on 130 Jackson St., $6.

 

On Saturday (1/29) the Bazaar on Brandon Rd. will host Roanoke’s Amanda Bocchi & the Body Parts. Also playing will be Blacksburg-based Nash Smith & the Ganges who will be opening the show. Personally, I am very excited to check out this new group from Blacksburg. I listened to their recordings a really dug it. A good mix of Portishead and Beach House. This show will start at 9pm, $5. Get there on time!!!

 

Running from now until February 27th at the Roanoke Natural Foods Co-Op is Stephen Cort Smith’s “the Dream Comparison”. This is a display of selected works created in MS Paint, the unusual medium Smith has become known for. All prints are for sale ranging from $10-$15. On Monday (1/31) the Shadowbox on Kirk Ave. is showing 80’s cult classic comedy, the Heathers! Come watch Winona & Christian kill for revenge and romance. Witness the famous dead gay son scene. Experience the trauma a high school goes through when struck by a mass “suicide”. This film starts at 8pm.

 

I’d like to end this post with two really awesome articles on one of the best venues in Roanoke, Bazaar Consignments. Jamie Booker’s consignment shop has come a long way in its year and a half of operation. Its hosted a slew of shows proving you can have great bands play, people turn out and not charge an arm and a leg at the door. Other music oriented venues have taken notice of the success of this basement consignment shop with Kirk Avenue Music Hall being one of these. In fact, Kirk Avenue has teamed up with the Bazaar to bring a monthly showcase to Kirk’s doors called “The Bazaar Presents…”. This showcase will follow the Bazaar’s tradition of only cost $5 as opposed to Kirk’s more pricier admission fees. On March 25th the first show of this series will take place featuring Magic Twig Community bands the Young Sinclairs & the Sad Cobras. Jamie has had two articles on her shop come out this week. Happy Holidays!!!

Happy Holidays to everyone from Scenic Recovery! First off we’d like to announce and congratulate the winners of the Scenic Recovery/ Planting Seeds Records record/CD giveaway. Congrats to photographer Kent Moore and musician Megan Glassman for being the first two people to respond to the giveaway! Expect more contests from us in the future! Now let’s get to what’s going on for these holiday weekends…

 

Tonight (Wednesday, Dec 22nd) community microcinema the Shadowbox presents a “Kung Fu Christmas” by showing kung fu cult film “Crippled Masters”. This 1979 film uses two actual handicapped actors playing the parts of two students disgraced and crippled by their evil master. The duo team up to combine their advantages against the former master. Starring Mu Chuan Chen and Jackie Conn this film starts at 7pm. Don’t miss it!

 

On Tuesday (Dec. 28th) the Bazaar on Brandon Rd will host a showcase by Virginia/North Carolina based label, Personal Records. The label focuses on releasing mostly cassettes of experimental folk from a close collection of friends. The “Personal Records Showcase” will feature bands from the label’s roster including the Delta Function, Arte Povera, Miles Nighthawk and Nobles. This show will start at 8pm sharp with Arte Povera and Nobles playing shorter sets. All ages and only $5!

 

On Wednesday December 29th the Shadowbox will be hosting Philosophy INC’s Holiday Special. Philosophy INC is a Roanoke based post-capitol media group focusing on documenting many of the facets of Roanoke’s underground art culture. This special will highlight some of those videos as well as provide local entertainment, holiday music, presentations from foreign dignitaries and more! This celebration starts at 7pm.

 

To round up our post  we give you Kirk Avenue Music Hall’s send off to 2010. “Flight 2011: Nonstop Flight New Year’s” is taking place at Kirk’s newest venture, the Sanctuary. This event will promise a great evening full of music, activities and fun. The evening will be complete with pilots, stewardess servers, passport photos, a cocktail cash bar. Music will be provided by the awesome sounds of the Circus Practice and mainstream rockers My Radio. Be sure to dress in your best 60s mod attire and bring $5 extra for the in flight fun pack. This evening starts at 9pm, 21 and up only and will cost you a cool $30.
