Rubber @ the Shadowbox, the Situationist @ the Bazaar, My Radio @ Kirk Avenue Music Hall

This past weekend’s show were quite a blast and we hope you got a chance to get out to a few of them! Here’s what’s going on this week starting with our Top 3…


This Sundayy (7/3) the Shadowbox on Kirk Ave. will be showing the comedy/horror film “Rubber”. Following the story of a telepathic killer tire named Robert this film has been hailed by critics all over the country. Come and see what this odd storyline is all about this Sunday at 8pm!

Also this Friday the Bazaar on Brandon hosts the Situationist fresh off their tour! Playing with the Situationist will be Charlottesville band the Virgo 9 and Heevahava’s own Mark Perry doing a set of solo songs. This show is set to start at 9pm and will only cost $5. Check out our review of the Situationist’s newest E.P. under our Music Reviews page.

On Thursday (6/30) 101.5 the (not so local) Music Place hosts a night at Kirk Avenue Music Hall. Roanoke rockers My Radio share the evening with English modern rock outfit, Scars on 45. Doors open at 7:30pm with Scars on 45 opening at 8pm. Half price tickets are offered with student ID.

Bazaar Presents @ Kirk Ave, the Sad Cobras @ the Bazaar, Blind Photographers & Mirror Kisses @ She-Sha, Bazaar Commercial

With a lot of stuff going on this week its hard to choose between them all. Here’s a listing of just a few great happenings starting with the Top 3!


On Thursday (6/23) Magic Twig Community flagship band the Sad Cobras play at the Bazaar. Opening for the Cobras will be Birmingham, Alabama band, the Grenadines. Come out, pick up a Cobras/ Hot Lava 7″ and introduce yourself to another great new band making their way through Roanoke! This show starts at 8pm and costs $5!


In Blacksburg on Friday (6/24) She-Sha will host a fond farewell to the Blind Photographers. AK Kanode’s brand of dance pop has built quite the popular following in Blacksburg over the past couple of years. Now Amy plans to head to the Northwest but doesn’t want to leave without one last show. Playing with her will be Harrisonburg dance duo, Mirror Kisses. Fronted by a former band member of Amy’s (George Clanton) Mirror Kisses is new wave the way it was intended and is one of our favorites! Above is a video for Mirror Kisses “Haunt Me”.

On Saturday (6/25) the Bazaar will host its 3rd installment of “the Bazaar Presents” at Kirk Avenue Music Hall. Richmond band and Triple Stamp Records flagship Homemade Knives will be headlining. Providing support will be Roanoke bands Red Clay River and Magic Twig Community outfit, the Missionaries. This is an important show not only for the Bazaar but also for Red Clay River who will be performing for the last time. Come and bid Red Clay River a proper farewell and enjoy an evening with friends! This show starts at 8pm and costs $7!

Hobo With a Shotgun, Small Sur w/ the Missionaries, Dogtown Roadhouse & More!

 

There is a lot going on this weekend around town and out of town. Here’s our Top 3 for the week! Scroll below the Top 3 to see a lot of other great happenings!


On Friday (6/17) the Shadowbox will present the debut of director/writer/producer Jason Eisener’s first full-length film, Hobo With a Shotgun! In a random train yard a hobo steps off a train with hopes of starting a new life. Quickly realizing this is a town where crime rules and justice drools he decides to take up the mantle of law. Armed with a pawn store shotgun and a fucked up set of morals he takes to the town to rid it of evil. Starting at at 8pm and only costing $5 this film is worth seeing more than once! The Shadowbox is located on Kirk Ave, downtown Roanoke.


On Sunday (6/19) the Missionaries will be hosting new friends from Baltimore, Small Sur! This show will take place at 1515 Roanoke Ave. with donations requested for the traveling group. Small Sur has garnered a lot of attention recently through their live shows and recordings with mentionings from blogs such as Tiny Mix Tapes to NPR to their own Baltimore City Paper. The Missionaries will also be playing that evening sharing their own blend of myth inspired folk. This show will start at 8pm, donations!   On Saturday (6/18) the Dogtown Roadhouse in Floyd celebrates its 1 year anniversary! Starting at 11am and running all the way to midnight Dogtown will be bringing back some of their favorite bands and people throughout the last year to celebrate. Music for the evening includes Wyndy Hill Travelers, Grass Monkey and DJ Joneski! Come out and celebrate with Dogtown, pick up a wood fire oven pizza and one of the great microbrews on tap!

  • Wednesday (6/15-26) Frogger (a play by Adam Hahn) directed by Cheryl Snodgrass. Studio Roanoke, downtown. 8pm.
  • Saturday (6/18) Goodwill Falcon, Rugby and Nobles at the Bazaar. 9pm, $5.
  • Tuesday (6/21) Gleaming the Cube at the Shadowbox. In celebration of “Go Skate Day”. 8pm, $5. All proceeds go to the Skateistan charity.

Early June Happenings…

Welcome to the beginning of Summer everyone! Here’s a list of a few things happening around town this week. Starting with our Top 3 listed below!


On Friday 6/10 the Bazaar on Brandon Rd. welcomes back the Charlottesville/D.C. duo, Birdlips! Also on board for the show will be Harrisonburg based Uncle Bengine & the Restraining Orders and Roanoke’s the John Barry Conception. This show is set to start at 9pm only costing you $5 for three great bands! Shown above is a music video for the Birdlips song “Under Crooked Trees”. The band is currently on tour in support of their new release “One Tongue”.

Also on Friday the 10th long running Roanoke modern rock band Madrone throws a CD release party at the Awful Arthur’s Towers location. “Karma Catastrophe” will be released that evening for all who wish to purchase it at the show. This full-length charts a new sound for Madrone and has a very personal theme for singer/guitar JD Sutphin. Opening the show that evening will be Washington, D.C.’s Along Those Lines and Greensboro, NC’s Hephystus. This show starts at 9pm costing you $7. On Saturday 6/11 the Shadowbox microcinema on Kirk Ave. will show indie cult hit King of Kong: A Fist Full of Quarters. This documentary follows the paths of two men from very different backgrounds. The first being a nervous middle school science teacher and the second being a narcissistic hot sauce entrepreneur/ classic arcade gamer-celebrity. They are put against each other in competition to win the ultimate prize; the highest score on Donkey Kong EVER! Get to the Shadowbox early and enter in the Donkey Kong tournament! This event will start at 7pm and is sponsored by 16 Blocks magazine.
